8 Essentials Anyone With Food Allergies Need To Pack When Travelling

1. EpiPen (Epinephrine injector)


One of the most obvious on the list is the Epipen. Epipen’s are the most important item that people with serve food allergies (anaphylaxis), must ensure they include when packing. Epipens are used to administer adrenaline to people having a allergic reaction, they often save many lives and with out them, the changes of death by anaphylaxis increase. Anyone who requires an Epipen should carry one with them wherever they go.


2. Antihistamine Drugs


Drugs such as Phenergan or Benadryl, can be used for less serve reactions and stop symptoms such as hives, coughing and nausea.


3. Translation Cards


Translation cards are especially helpful for foreign airlines and restaurants. By translating your allergy warning into the language of the country in which you are travelling, allows you to easily communicate the severity of and dangers of food allergies and minimise the changes of reaction occur due to language barriers


4. Emergency Action Plan


Your action plan should be carried with you at all times, so that if you have an allergic reaction other people will be able to know what to do. They should include any drugs that should be administered, all procedures that should be undertaken and any emergency contacts.


5. Medical ID


Medical ID jewellery are helpful if you are travelling by yourself or in case you get separate from your group. They ensure that if you were to suffer an allergic reaction in a situation where you do not know anyone, that other people and doctors are able to understand what is causing your reaction.


6. Letter from Doctor


When travelling, especially overseas, it is always a good idea to have a letter from a doctor stating your allergies in case security at any airport asks why you are carrying a needle (Epipen).


7. Hand Wipes


Hand wipes are useful to take with you when you are travelling, especially on airplanes and public transport, to allow for you to easily wipe down and sanitise any area which may have been contaminated, minimising the chances of having an allergic reaction.


8. Safe Foods


If you are unsure of what foods are going to be available that are safe for you to eat, especially on airplanes, it is a good idea to pack non-perishable foods that you know are safe for you eat
